The Kominas - We Got Time
"This idea of being a political band.. what does that mean? Your art is gonna be about your life. And if it’s good and honest, you’re gonna talk about your identity. It’s not political, it’s just what it is." - Shahjehan Khan, The Kominas
The Kominas came to Miner Street with enthusiasm, ready to record their song “We Got Time” and use their voices to tell the story of their band and why they choose to make music. The chemistry between the band members was infectious, and everyone in the building seemed to have a smile on their face throughout the weekend. One special thing about The Kominas is that they comfortably switch roles in the band, sharing vocal responsibilities, trading instruments, and never missing a beat. On this song, Sunny sings lead and plays drums, while Karna—who is more commonly the drummer—takes on the guitar and leaves nothing behind. The lyrics, which read, “Take your time, going up the mountain/otherwise, you know you’re gonna fall” caution the listener not to jump into fame, like the band encountered early in their career, when the media picked up on their story and fetishized their identity, making the music secondary.
The sonic spectrum of “We Got Time” is super rich, with layered guitars, energized backup vocals, and a modulation on the drum tracks that is subtle, but provides texture. Although often called a punk band, this song definitely has a psychedelic vibe. What is punk about The Kominas is the energy they put into making the song. No one held back in the studio or was afraid to be heard. This sentiment echoes in their interview, when they express that, while they do not wish to be labeled or defined by their racial or religious identity, their identity lives and comes through in their music. It’s not political, it’s just what it is."
