Lea Thomas - Wild As You Are

For Lea, writing music is rooted in her connection to nature. [...] ‘Wild As You Are’ is a soundscape, mirrored in the landscapes that Lea farms as she meanders the world.

Lea Thomas moved from Hawaii to New York City when she was 17 to pursue a career in music.  Coming from a small island which, as she puts it, is a "very isolated experience of being American”, NYC was certainly a different world.  She worked in the office of a music studio, but eventually feeling disconnected from nature, she decided to tailor her lifestyle to include more natural elements.  Lea started working at an herb shop.  She sought green spaces within the city, going on weed walks, where she finds beneficial plants and herbs growing in lots around the city with which she can make medicines.

For Lea, writing music is rooted in her connection to nature. Her intention is for a song to be reminiscent of the spirit of the natural environment that inspired it.  She works primarily with the most natural instrument of all, her voice, focusing on creating ambiance by using vocal textures.  Her writing partner, John Thayer also keeps this in mind when they create together.  In fact, everyone seemed conscious of this as the weekend unfolded.  Lea and John were joined by Caleb Lindskoog and Anna Fox Rochinski.  Caleb, along with his wife Joan Tick who Curated the episode, released Lea’s first LP ‘Want For Nothing’ in January 2017 on their label Tacky Records.  Anna, of Boston band Quilt, played on the song and also debuted as a co-producer with Brian.  She really seemed to be natural in this role, and was very mindful in the way she listened and interacted with the rest of the crew.

The musicians worked together to find the best arrangement, collaborating on changes to the drum pattern, song structure, and instrumentation.  Lea and John, who are used to working mostly with each other, were open-minded and easy to work with.  They even allowed changes they were originally uneasy with, such as cutting an entire chorus of the song.  This decision ended up creating a really beautiful effect, and demonstrates the benefit of collaborative production.

The healing energy Lea brought into Miner Street was contagious.  There was a level of trust and healthy communication that really contributed to the vibe of the weekend and, in turn, to the song.  ‘Wild As You Are’ is a soundscape, mirrored in the landscapes that Lea farms as she meanders the world.
